چکیده
Composting has been used to dispose of animal mortalities and infected materials, such as manure feed, during major disease outbreaks. In this study, we adapted the plastic-wrapped mortality composting system developed by Canadian Food Inspection Agency 2004 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak compost swine mortalities. The goals study were evaluate performance field test its ability eliminate spread airborne pathogens through aeration ducts. Two cover ground cornstalks woodchips, tested using passively actively aerated sheds. inoculated with Salmonella spp. vaccine strains Bovine herpesvirus-1 viral diarrhea virus. Air samples collected from upper duct (air outlet) first 10 d negative for viruses tested, which indicated that aerosol transmission was limited. plenum placed under helped keep conditions aerobic, O2 concentrations both units above 11%. Actively had highest degree-hours (1,462 °C h d−1), followed (1,312 woodchips (1,303 (1,062 d−1). After a 7-wk period, all three inactivated based on quantitative polymerase chain reaction results. not African fever virus, but temperature data showed if they were, potential

Composting as a suitable technique for managing swine mortalities
parently fears that buried animals could contaminate groundwater and that emissions from incinerators could contaminate the air. All states allow dead pigs to be either buried, incinerated, or taken for rendering, and some states also allow swine carcasses to be fed to animals (e.g., Minnesota) or to be composted (e.g., Missouri).2Fewer swine farms now have the option of rendering swinecarcasse...

Monitoring of a passively-aerated plastic-wrapped mortality composting system designed for emergency disposal of diseased swine highlighted the importance of the physical characteristics of materials used to envelop the carcasses. Inadequate moisture was a problem when using envelope materials such as ground cornstalks or straw having low density and high air-filled porosity. High O2 concentrat...
